CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE / 主席的话

Singapore’s Pat Wo Wui Kun is the oldest Cantonese opera association in existence today, with a history spanning 168 years as of 2025. (*Please refer to the Association’s profile for more details.) Initially known as Liyuan Tang (“Hall of Pear Garden“), it served as a gathering place for Cantonese opera performers and various professions of the trade, similar in function to a guild of master artisans.

Membership in the association used to be restricted in the early days to professional Cantonese opera performers and other personnel within the trade. Back when Cantonese opera was a form of mainstream entertainment for the masses, opera troupes that toured Southeast Asia would use the Association as a base. United by a shared passion for the art form, the performers would contribute a portion of their earnings to the Association whenever they went on tour. The Association also enjoyed the support of community leaders and businessmen among overseas Chinese. As part of an annual occasion to mark the birthday of the patron deity Hua Guang, opera troupes from all over would gather for a grand celebration, a phenomenon that attested to the unequalled status of Pat Wo Wui Kun.

However, with the passage of time, Chinese community leaders, businessmen and other well-wishers among the audience became advanced in age. As the entertainment industry became increasingly diverse, professional Cantonese opera troupes that once toured from one place to another could not longer sustain livelihood the way it used to.

Today, Pat Wo Wui Kun no longer sees itself as a guild for professional artists but serves a more general purpose in promoting Cantonese opera. We welcome everybody interested in the art form to join us. To help enhance knowledge and skills in musical and theatrical aspects of Cantonese opera, the association offers a variety of classes to enthusiasts in Cantonese opera.

1857
1857

The association began as Li Yuan Tang with address at 58 Upper Chin Chew Street (known colloquially as Tofu Street). Legend has it that back in China the actor Li Wenmao had taken part in uprising against Manchu rule in 1854, leading to the guild organisation Qionghua Huiguan in Foshan being forcibly closed down.

1890

The British colonial government of Singapore then required all societies to be registered in accordance with the Societies Ordinance of 1889, or risk being declared illegal. Liyuan Tang was thus renamed Pat Wo Wui Kun 八和会馆 (literally the Guild of ‘Eight Harmonies’), after the similar organisation in Guangzhou. The new address was in Wayang Street, where the Southern Hotel would be built in the 1920s.

1906

In 1906, Pat Wo Wui Kun was registered with new address at a three-storey building at 40 Mosque Street. A couplet inscribed and presented at the time reads: “As ceremonial music is composed of sounds from eight different materials, may fellow talents gather here in harmonious atmosphere.” Acquisition of the new premises were initiated by president He Dashen along with others.

1932

After some years of crisis with physical assets, the guild managed to rent premises at 30 Keong Saik Road for use.

1942

As the Japanese occupied Malaya and Singapore, the operations of Pat Wo Wui Kun came to a standstill.

1939
